They say that all true genius has a hint of madness about it. This is true; look at how this manifests itself in the gaming world. Super Mario is a fat Italian plumber who goes around stamping on mushrooms and turtles, angry birds is about throwing chickens at pigs, and Pokemon largely involves lurking in the long grass throwing balls at monsters. On that note then, this week I have been playing Gregg, the new app game from Namco Bandai, and there is certainly more than a hint of madness in the air.
To explain what’s going on here, Gregg appears to be a block with a face, whose sole aim is to make sure that sleep walking chickens don’t step on an exploding wooden bridge. In the cold light of day, this COULD be considered a bit mental. In reality though Gregg is a charming little game, treading the line between being difficult and addictive very effectively.
Once you get to grips with the controls you’ll find that they are quite intuitive; you drag your finger across the screen to move Gregg around the environment, trying to avoid dropping too far down the map and getting stuck and unable to help your chicken friend.
The interface is quite similar to what you might find in Angry Birds, with the aim being to collect all the puzzle pieces and achieve three stars per level, and the quit/restart/skip options all in a similar format. It feels familiar and allows you to pick things up very quickly. No surprise then that it was picked as App of the Week by the San Francisco chronicle just before Christmas. The app itself is free and includes 14 levels, however for 99p you can unlock another four sets of levels so you’re able to indulge in more when you get hooked.
In summary then, Gregg is a good fun little app that will keep you smiling through your lunch break. Well worth a look and well worth getting hooked on.
