TGS 2014: The Virtuality Paradigm – Oculus Rift

After taking Project Morpheus for a spin at the Tokyo Game Show, I felt it was only fair to cross over to the other side of the convention hall and try out the nearest competition, the Oculus Rift. On the walk over, I passed by the Samsung booth and noticed that there were people trying out some sort of head-mounted device. My immediate thought was, oh God, here we go with everyone and their mother jumping on the “VR” hype train with a flurry of crap Oculus/Project Morpheus copies. It turned out to be something quite extraordinary.

TGS 2014: The Virtuality Paradigm – Project Morpheus

One of the things I absolutely wanted to try out at the Tokyo Game Show was Project Morpheus. VR is being heralded as the next big evolution for gaming and there is A LOT of money being thrown at getting this technology up and running reliably and at a cost that ordinary people will be willing to pay for.

Before pulling on the headset my main concerns were; 1) Is this going to make me want to puke? 2) Is this going to make me feel like I’m in another world or simply like I have a screen strapped one inch from my face? And 3) Is this experience going to make me, or anyone else want to adopt VR as a mainstream gaming device?

TGS 2014: The Good, The Bad And The Weird

Thanks to some deft verbal duelling on the Public Day, I was able to get my mitts on a lot more games than I was expecting. Over the course of 2 days I saw some amazing looking things heading our way, some disappointments and a few things that made me think “what the fudge?”.  I’ll be writing about my favourite picks from Tokyo Game Show 2014 later, but for now, heres a rundown some of the good, the bad and the downright weird.

TGS 2014: They come for the games; they stay for the babes.

Well, another year and another Tokyo Game Show is finished and boy what a show it was. This year saw over 400 companies setting up shop for 4 days in the Makuhari Messe convention centre in Tokyo. Many of you may remember last year’s TGS if only for the fact that everyone was pretty peeved that the sole focus of the show seemed to be Japanese centric handheld gaming. Not so this year.

A Game You Might Just Hate To Love

This is not a review. These are simply my impressions of the game after roughly a week of playing it.

So, where does one begin when talking about Destiny?

It seems pretty clear now that whether you love it or hate it, Destiny is not really the game many were expecting. Bungie billed it as an “open word shooter”, what ever that was supposed to mean. Most simply took to calling it an MMO FPS, and if that was your view, then you’re probably one the disappointed. Destiny is definitely and FPS, but it is only vaguely MMOish. And as far as being an “open” world… Well it’s more of a “slightly ajar” sort of deal.

Sebastian’s Holiday Season Preview

It may be September, but where I live in Japan it’s still hotter than Zeus’s butthole. I’m currently sitting in my air-conditioned apartment, looking through the upcoming games release schedule, and boy am I excited.

It’s been almost a year since the new generation of consoles landed and though there have been some worthy entries on both platforms, nothing has stood out enough to me to demand an upgrade. Until now. Amazingly, despite the heat and humidity, I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas.
