In a past editorial, I riled against the fact that most video game developers seem to consider ‘story’ to be one of the least important factors of a game. However, back in the 90s when adventure games were riding high, games were valued on the strength of their narratives, and few have been as acclaimed as Grim Fandango, which was recently remastered and released on PS4, PS Vita and Steam. Evolve
Evolve is a difficult review for me, as I can’t help but view it through the prism of my own weighty expectations. For a long time, Evolve has looked like the game that was finally going to kick start the age of PS4 and XBone, using the grunt to power something different and innovative rather than something that’s the same but prettier. Regardless, any new franchise is always going to invoke adulation and derision in equal measure, either for finally being something different to the existing fare or for being too different to what we’re used to. Either way, it was very much a sense of anticipation that washed over me as the disc went into the Xbox and I sat back to see how it all panned out. Read more …
Battlefield Hardline – Beta Review “The Bad”
Hot on the heels of the Battlefield Hardline beta weekend I was compelled to bring you all my thoughts on the direction the franchise is taking. I’ve always been a stalwart supporter of the Battlefield franchise, and I’ve defended the various Battlefield releases against tirades of mocking abuse from die-hard Call of Duty fans. As you can imagine I was keen to properly check out Battlefield Hardline during the free beta weekend to see if it was worth parting with my hard-earned pennies for. So how was it? Read on. Read more …

After the solid foundation laid down by Iron From Ice, the miserable exploits of House Forrester continue in the second episode of Telltale’s Game of Thrones series, The Lost Lords. And only two months after the first episode! How unusually expedient. Read more …
How to Survive: Storm Warning Edition
This review has been a long time coming. By that, I mean I’ve put it off for far too long and it’s about time that I get something posted before my editors show up at the proverbial door with a metaphorical tire iron and some choice words regarding what constitutes “enough time”.
Just kidding. They’re awesome and haven’t pressured me at all. Which is good! Because this delay was actually warranted. The reasons are specific to me, but that doesn’t make them any less valid. Read more …
Life is Strange: Episode 1 – Chrysalis
After being awarded a scholarship to study photography at the exclusive Blackwell Academy, jaded teen Max Caulfield (what a phony!) has an apocalyptic vision of her town being torn apart by a tornado made of glass. Soon after, she realises she has somehow gained the ability to rewind time. Try to picture what Sands of Time might be like if the prince were a teenage girl in the 21st century. That’s some imagination you have there. Read more …
