Blizzard has announced its first new IP in 17 years, Overwatch. The game is a team-based, 6v6 multiplayer shooter with a focus on “fun, over-the-top” characters. Blizzard announced the game with an incredible CG trailer that rivals Pixar. Overwatch sees an elite international task force charged with ending the war and restoring liberty to all nations.
Overwatch is set on Earth in the near future, with the titular heroes doing battle in arenas ranging from the pyramids of Egypt to the streets of London. The gameplay and tone is similar to that of Valve’s Team Fortress series. Players can use a variety of powers with the crazy assortment of classes. Tracer, a former British test pilot, can teleport, drop bombs and reverse time. Winston, a genius ape, can use his jetpack to get to rooftops and smash down on enemies.
Overwatch will be getting a PC beta in 2015. Players can sign up for it at playoverwatch.com. No pricing model was announced although it is likely to be free-to-play with implemented micro-transactions. Blizzard also revealed that the cancelled MMO Titan eventually became Overwatch.
“We [Blizzard] decided internally to go another way,”
“What really happened was we decided to go this way. Overwatch is a very different game than what we were planning to build.”
