Bridge Constructor Review – Xbox One

I’m sure there are those out there who would forgive my lack of enthusiasm when I was tasked with reviewing a game entitled ‘Bridge Constructor’ for Xbox One. Patiently rocking back and forth until the new Gears Of War Ultimate Edition release came around, constructing bridges was the last thing I wanted to spend my time doing. Or so I thought.
As it turns out, Bridge Constructor is a solid puzzler filled with addictive elements and a challenging difficulty level.

Should I quit my job and become a professional bridge constructor?…

Clearly taking more than a little inspiration from the ‘Bridge Builder’ series from way back in 2000, German developer Headup Games have released Bridge Constructor on PC, mobile, and now console.
The premise is simple: you’re given a gap in a road and are tasked with constructing a bridge to fill it. I initially took this challenge lightly and figured I could pretty much just draw a straight line with a bit of support underneath. But you do not complete the level unless you can get two cars (or trucks if you’re really good) safely across to the other side. This naturally led to me trying to cheat by making bridges that catapulted the cars to the other side but it doesn’t really work like that. Eventually through patience the game becomes a sort of rhythmic game of errands, one that rewards careful thought and planning rather than just throwing materials in a pile for the cars to traverse.

probably not.

Initially you’re given good ol’ fashioned wood to make all your bridges out of, though as you progress you unlock stone, wires, and steel. Each of these materials have their own distinctive properties as well as weight and cost, and with each level done on a strict budget by the later levels figuring out the correct formations and combinations of materials can make your head spin.

My only gripe with the game is the PS2 era texture packs they used. These are acceptable on mobile gaming though considering the console release was touted as having ‘HD Textures’ it’s a little disappointing. On my Xbox One displayed on a 50” TV some of those grass textures looked like they were straight out of Crash Bandicoot.
The controls seemed to have transferred without a hitch from the point and click of PC or touch of mobile and the Xbox One version also includes the SlopeMania expansion which is a nice touch for when you finished the standard game as this mode ramps the difficulty up quite a bit.
All in all Bridge Constructor is a neat little game that does everything you would expect from it, given a chance you might find yourself rhythmically constructing bridges yourself too… or just making giant car ramps. Your call.
