During Bethesda’s E3 press conference, legendary game designer Todd Howard presented a substantial gameplay demo for Fallout 4. It was also revealed that the game will release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on November 10th 2015. The game features a new and substantial crafting and customisation system. In Fallout 4, every object you now pick up can be recycled into one of many raw resources that can be used to craft a number of different things. Fallout 4 will feature 50 base weapons and 700 weapon mods to customise them with. Players will also be able to craft and heavily customise their own set of Power Armour.
The demo also showcased the ability to build houses, bases and settlements where you see fit. You can erect entire buildings, defences and decorations for your settlements. Players can also create Brahmin caravans to haul goods between their settlements. They can also create sentry turrets, stationary flamethrowers and security terminals to connect and govern them. You may need to construct a generator to power your creations. Players will need to do this in order to protect their settlements, which will be attacked by raiders.
Character customisation is now done via real-time sculpting, as opposed to the old slider system. Facial features are customised by simply pointing to them with a cursor. Players can use a male or female avatar in the game. Fallout 4 features the familiar S.P.E.C.I.A.L interface, allowing you to allocate skill points to strength, perception, endurance, constitution, intelligence, agility and luck. The robotic housekeeper seen in the game’s prologue, which takes place before the nuclear event, also calls your character by the name you choose. Apparently Bethesda recorded 1000 common names so that the player can hear their name spoken at certain points in the game
“Player freedom remains our absolute number one goal,”
Fallout 4 is built on a new version of Bethesda’s “Creation” engine, which features dynamic volumetric lighting. Like previous games in the series, the game can be played in either third or first person. Dialogue sequences are now mapped to a face button, dropping the old method of scrolling through options. Players can walk away mid-conversation or act aggressively by shooting the other character.
The game also features a dog companion that was shown in the reveal trailer. By pointing at distant objects and emeies, you can bring up context-sensitive button prompts to interact with them in different ways. The dog was shown retrieving items and distracting enemies.
VATS was also briefly shown in the demo. It has apparently been enhanced for additional control.
The Pip-Boy interface also makes a return in Fallout 4. This allows players to navigate their inventory and check their status. Players can also find game cartridges around the world, allowing them to play Fallout-themed homages to old-school arcade games such as Donkey Kong. Bethesda also announced a colelctor’s edition of the game, which features a real-life Pip-Boy that can house your smartphone. There will be a companion app that uses the same interface and coding as the one in the game.
