Alphabear: Word Puzzle Game is a mobile app created by Spry Fox. It’s another word game, like scrabble and words with friends; however, much more entertaining. I was drawn in to the game by the adorable bears as they hopped, smiled, and made cute little noises. What can I say, the schoolgirl in me could not help but squeal in joy.
The purpose of the game is to make words with letters before the letters disappear. Letters appear on the screen as you create more words until the whole board is full. However, the catch is each letter only has so long until it turns to stone. Say for instance a letter has the number 10 on it that means you need to use that letter in the one of the next ten words you create or you’ll lose the letter.
Now the bear part of the title comes into play with the fact that when you create words, bears appear on the board in place of the letters. These bears represent your points. They get bigger as you earn more points, until no more words can be created.
The game works in a sort of loop, basically you play different game boards to win different bears (Golf Bear, Robot Bear, Fun Bear, etc.) and then use the bears to get more points while you play the boards. Unfortunately, you cannot play forever without paying. Gotta love those freemium games. But you can play a significant amount, which is just enough to keep my mind occupied when I am bored or need a stress reliever.
Overall, the task of the game seemed very simple and remedial at first. However, after I beat the chapter 1 boards, I started chapter 2. And let me tell you chapter 2 becomes much more difficult. The letters usually start with a number 10 on them, giving you plenty of chances to use that letter before it turns to stone. Unfortunately, in chapter 2 the letters don’t always start with the number 10, making it more frustrating to use the letters and earn points before they turn to stone. This is not much of a setback and I am actually happy for the challenge. It definitely helps with the replayability of the game. Plus, it definitely helps that the little bears cheer you on along the way. Alphabear is altogether a playful and entertaining game and you should definitely check it out while it is still in its prime.

About Taylor Barkley
It’s actually quite simple. I love writing. I love playing video games. So, why not combine the two? When I’m not focusing on my academics, I’m either writing or playing video games. As a writer and avid reader I love a good story, because of this I tend to lean towards games that have a strong narrative aspect. Currently, I am studying Computer Science and Game Design in North Carolina. My ultimate goal being to one day make a name for myself in the game narrative field.
