Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XI for PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 will close in March 2016. However, the PC version will continue to run for the foreseeable future.
Final Fantasy XI’s final main scenario is called Rhapsodies of Vana’diel, and it brings three new chapters to the game. The first is due to launch in May, with Chapters two and three launching in August and November respectively.
The massively multiplayer online role-playing game released back in 2002 for PlayStation 2 and PC. It then later released on Xbox 360. The final expansion is designed to tie together the last 13 years.
“we aim for it serve as the ultimate compilation of all we have accomplished to date”
“We plan for this to be a grand conclusion to the Final Fantasy series’ first MMORPG, and indeed, the first console MMORPG, in a way that will be recorded in the annals of the genre’s history.”
“We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to those who have enjoyed Final Fantasy 11 on these platforms and to those who have assisted us in bringing Vana’diel to you.”
Following 13 years of support, a new event will also be introduced called The Goddess’s Gala. This will bring back fan-favourite campaigns for new and returning players. Square has also announced that FFXI will also get a mobile version that will release during 2016 in Japan, North America and Europe.
