Sony Issues Statement Regarding PSN Outages

Sony has issued a statement on the PlayStation blog explaining the PSN problems that have been occurring over the past 48 hours. Here’s what Catherine Jensen, vice president of SCEA Consumer Experience, had to say on the matter:

“The video game industry has been experiencing high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay,”

“Multiple networks, including PSN, have been affected over the last 48 hours. PSN engineers are working hard to restore full network access and online gameplay as quickly as possible.”

“From time to time there may be disruptions in service due to surges in traffic, but our engineers will be working to restore service as quickly as possible.”

Problems arose on Christmas day as users were unable to sign into the PlayStation Network. Since then, a group of black-hat hackers calling themselves “Lizard Squad” have identified themselves as the culprits. The outages are being caused by a DDOS attack. In layman’s terms, this means the PSN servers are being overloaded with data thus preventing people from signing in. It is not technically illegal or a form of hacking.
