NetherRealm Studios is working toward another Mortal Kombat game, even as fans keep watching for signs of Injustice 3. Series co-creator Ed Boon said in a new Collider interview that the studio is “definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game” and has other projects moving at the same time. VGC and GamesRadar both covered the comments, which came while Boon was promoting the next Mortal Kombat movie.
Boon did not name NetherRealm’s next game or confirm whether Injustice 3 is in active development. He said he would get in trouble if he gave too much away, then pointed to multiple projects across games and other media. That keeps the studio’s immediate roadmap under wraps, but it also confirms Mortal Kombat is not being parked after Mortal Kombat 1.

Mortal Kombat 1 is no longer the only question

Mortal Kombat 1 launched worldwide in September 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC. Warner Bros. Games described it as the latest main entry in the franchise and a fresh timeline built around Liu Kang’s New Era.
The game’s post-launch arc has already shaped fan expectations around NetherRealm’s next move. NetherRealm confirmed last year that Mortal Kombat 1 would not receive more DLC characters or story chapters as the team shifted focus to its next project, while still leaving room for balance and technical support.
That made Boon’s latest comments more pointed than a routine franchise reassurance. He is not only saying Mortal Kombat will continue someday. He is saying the studio is already pursuing another entry while also working on other announcements.

Injustice 3 rumors have not gone away

The timing also matters because Injustice 3 rumors have been building again. ComicBook reported last week that a Warner Bros. Games artist’s resume listed Injustice 3 as a project they had worked on, citing MP1st’s original report. That is not the same as an announcement from Warner Bros. or NetherRealm, but it gave fans another reason to think the DC fighting series may finally be returning.
Injustice has been absent since Injustice 2 launched in 2017. Before Mortal Kombat 1, NetherRealm had moved between Mortal Kombat and Injustice across several releases, which is why every new studio tease quickly turns into DC speculation. VGC also noted older signs of Injustice work, including a 2020 NetherRealm job ad that referenced graphics work for both Mortal Kombat and Injustice.
Boon’s answer does not settle that speculation. It leaves room for Injustice 3, another DC project, or something else entirely. The only firm point is that Mortal Kombat remains part of NetherRealm’s active future.

NetherRealm is juggling games and media

Boon’s mention of “other forms of media” also fits the timing around the Mortal Kombat film sequel. GamesRadar reported that Boon has been involved more closely with the new movie, including discussions around elements from the games that the sequel should include.
NetherRealm’s next announcement could still be a while away, but Boon has narrowed the conversation in one useful way. Mortal Kombat is continuing, Injustice 3 remains unconfirmed, and the studio has more than one project moving behind the scenes. That gives fighting game fans a clearer picture without pretending the next reveal has already happened.
