Gothic 1 Remake is almost here, but physical buyers have one thing to check first

May 26, 2026·3 min read
Gothic 1 Remake is finally bringing the Colony back on June 5, and for old-school RPG fans, that is a big moment. THQ Nordic and Alkimia Interactive are rebuilding the 2001 cult classic with modern visuals, updated combat, expanded questlines, and the same harsh prison-world setup that made the original stand out.

There is one catch for players planning to buy the disc version. The physical release will need an online update before it can be played properly, so anyone hoping for a completely offline, plug-and-play copy should know that before launch.

The disc version needs a day-one update

The big warning is tied to the physical edition. Players buying Gothic 1 Remake on disc should expect to download an update before playing, which makes the retail version less self-contained than some collectors may want.

That does not change the game itself, but it matters for people who buy physical copies for preservation, offline access, or long-term collecting. A disc that depends on a launch update is not the same as one that carries the complete playable version on its own.

Digital players will not have the same issue in practice, since the updated build should be part of the download once the game unlocks.

The remake is trying to keep the old Gothic feel

Gothic 1 Remake returns players to the Valley of Mines, where prisoners are trapped under a magical barrier after a royal mining operation goes wrong. The Colony is ruled by rival factions, and the Nameless Hero has to survive by choosing allies, learning the world, and earning his place the hard way.

That rough edge is the whole point. The remake is not trying to turn Gothic into a cleaner modern fantasy RPG with a map full of icons. THQ Nordic describes it as a faithful rebuild with an organic open world, NPC routines, faction choices, and more than 50 hours of gameplay.

PC players should also check the requirements

The remake is being built for modern hardware, and the PC requirements are not light. The minimum setup calls for 16GB RAM, an Intel Core i7-7700K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X, and an 8GB VRAM GPU such as an RTX 2070 or RX 6700 XT. Recommended specs move up to 32GB RAM and a 12GB VRAM GPU such as an RTX 3070 Ti or RX 6800 XT.

That is worth checking now, especially for players who remember the original as an older PC RPG that could run on almost anything. This remake is a full modern rebuild, not a simple remaster.

The Colony opens in June

THQ Nordic has confirmed Gothic 1 Remake for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on June 5, 2026. The official site also lists a demo, Nyras Prologue, on Steam and GOG for players who want to test the remake’s feel before launch.

For fans who have waited years to return to the Colony, the main question is simple: buy digital, or buy physical knowing that the disc version still needs an online update before the full experience is ready.
