01Overview

Overwatch is a free-to-play first-person hero shooter developed by Blizzard Entertainment. Players choose from a large roster of heroes divided into Tank, Damage, and Support roles, then combine their weapons and abilities in team battles. Standard matches use a 5v5 format across objective-based modes such as Escort, Control, Hybrid, Push, and Flashpoint, with both Quick Play and ranked Competitive Play. Role Queue creates teams with one Tank, two Damage, and two Support heroes, while Open Queue allows flexible lineups. Originally released in early access as Overwatch 2 in 2022 as a successor to the 2016 original, the game was rebranded as simply Overwatch in 2026. Heroes now have sub-roles with additional passive effects and earn Minor and Major Perks during matches, allowing abilities to be modified as a round progresses. Stadium provides a separate best-of-seven format where teams purchase items and Powers between rounds to create specialized builds. Regular seasons add heroes, maps, limited-time events, and balance updates, while the 2026 relaunch introduced connected narrative arcs told through in-game events, map changes, trailers, comics, and short stories.
