Assassin's Creed Shadows is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Ubisoft Quebec and set in feudal Japan during the turbulent late Sengoku period. Players follow the intertwined stories of Naoe, a skilled shinobi Assassin from Iga Province, and Yasuke, a powerful samurai, as the two unlikely allies become caught up in the conflicts shaping Japan's future. Naoe and Yasuke offer distinct but complementary playstyles. Naoe specialises in stealth, parkour and assassination, using shadows, noise, a grappling hook and tools such as kunai, shuriken and smoke bombs to infiltrate enemy strongholds. Yasuke is built around direct combat, using his strength, armour and heavier weapons to confront enemies head-on. Players can explore an open world filled with castle towns, ports, shrines and countryside, with changing seasons, dynamic weather and reactive environments affecting exploration and stealth. Progression, equipment and abilities can be developed throughout the adventure, while players can recruit allies and build a customisable hideout that supports their growing network. Assassin's Creed Shadows combines the series' familiar exploration and assassination mechanics with two contrasting approaches to combat and infiltration.
