01Overview
Baldur’s Gate is a fantasy role-playing game set in the Forgotten Realms and based on a modified version of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition rules. The story follows a protagonist of the player’s creation who leaves Candlekeep and travels across the Sword Coast alongside a party of companions. Their journey centers on uncovering the cause of a growing iron crisis threatening the region, identifying those responsible and discovering dark secrets about the protagonist’s origins while surviving repeated attempts on their life. Exploration takes place across towns, wilderness areas, ruins and dungeons, with quests and encounters spread throughout the world. Players create a character by choosing a race, class, alignment and abilities, then recruit companions to form a party of up to six characters. Combat runs in real time but can be paused at any moment to issue commands, cast spells, change targets or reposition party members. Characters gain experience and equipment as they progress, while different classes provide access to distinct weapons, spells and abilities. Dialogue choices, reputation and party composition can also affect how characters react to the player during the journey.
