Call of Duty: Warzone was a free-to-play battle royale first-person shooter set in the Call of Duty universe. Up to 150 players parachuted onto a large map, scavenged weapons and equipment, and fought to be the last squad standing as the playable area shrank. The game featured an in-match Cash system for purchasing loadout drops and other tactical items at Buy Stations, as well as a respawn mechanic called the Gulag, where eliminated players could win a one-on-one fight for a second chance. Warzone originally launched as a companion to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), using Verdansk as its main battle royale map. Contracts provided objectives and rewards during matches, while vehicles let squads cross the map quickly. Plunder offered a respawn-enabled alternative focused on collecting and depositing the most Cash instead of surviving to the end. Later seasons integrated weapons, Operators, and other content from Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard, while Caldera eventually replaced Verdansk as the primary map. The original version was renamed Warzone Caldera after the separate 2022 successor launched. Its servers shut down in September 2023, leaving its progression and inventory inaccessible.
