01Overview
Counter-Strike 2 is a free-to-play multiplayer tactical first-person shooter and the fifth main entry in the Counter-Strike series. Released in September 2023, it serves as the direct replacement for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on Steam. Two teams, Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists, compete in objective-based rounds across modes such as bomb defusal and hostage rescue. Players buy weapons, armor, and equipment between rounds using money earned through kills and team objectives, while each side works to complete its objective or eliminate the opposing team. Built on the Source 2 engine, Counter-Strike 2 introduced dynamic volumetric smoke grenades, upgraded and overhauled maps, redesigned visual effects and audio, and a sub-tick networking architecture designed to register movement, shots, and grenade throws independently of traditional tick intervals. All cosmetic items from CS:GO carried forward. Competitive mode assigns separate Skill Groups by map, while Premier uses a numerical CS Rating and a pick-and-ban map system. The game also includes Casual, Deathmatch, Wingman, and community-created maps and modes through the Steam Workshop.
