Dragon Age II is the sequel to Dragon Age: Origins and follows Hawke, a refugee who escapes the destruction of Lothering and eventually rises to become the Champion of Kirkwall. Players choose Hawke’s gender and one of three classes: warrior, rogue, or mage. The story spans roughly a decade and follows conflicts involving mages, templars, Qunari, criminals, and other factions within Kirkwall. Dialogue uses a wheel-based system with diplomatic, humorous, and aggressive responses, while major decisions can affect quests, companions, and later events. Combat takes place in real time but can be paused to issue commands, select abilities, change targets, and control individual members of the four-character party. Each class and companion has separate ability trees that expand as characters gain levels. Companions also react to Hawke’s actions through a friendship and rivalry system. Either path can deepen the relationship, unlock conversations and abilities, and influence how companions respond during important moments. Party members have their own personal quests, backgrounds, and potential romances that develop throughout Hawke’s years in Kirkwall.
