01Overview
Far Cry is a first-person shooter developed by Crytek and set across a chain of tropical islands. Players control former soldier Jack Carver, whose boat is destroyed after he agrees to transport journalist Valerie Constantine to the remote archipelago. The campaign takes place across beaches, jungles, military bases and research facilities, with large outdoor areas giving players room to approach encounters from different directions. Combat combines firearms, stealth and vehicles, while binoculars can be used to scout enemy positions before attacking. Jack initially fights heavily armed mercenaries, but the story gradually introduces genetically engineered creatures known as Trigens. The mix of open environments, long-range combat and reactive enemy AI helped distinguish Far Cry from many other first-person shooters released at the time.
