01Overview

Left 4 Dead 2 is a cooperative first-person shooter set during the aftermath of an apocalyptic pandemic. Four Survivors fight their way through cities, swamps, cemeteries, and other areas of the American South while facing hordes of Infected. Campaigns are divided into multiple stages connected by safe rooms, with each group working toward an escape sequence at the finale. Players carry firearms, melee weapons, explosives, and medical supplies while dealing with Special Infected such as Hunters, Smokers, Chargers, Jockeys, and Tanks. The AI Director adjusts enemy encounters, item placement, and pacing according to how the group is performing. Campaign mode supports up to four players, with AI companions filling empty Survivor slots. Versus lets one team control Survivors while the other takes control of Special Infected before switching sides. Survival challenges players to hold a position against endless waves, while Scavenge has teams collect gas cans to fuel a generator while opponents control the Infected. Realism modifies Campaign rules by reducing assistance and making communication and teamwork more important.
