Mafia is a third-person action-adventure game set in the fictional American city of Lost Heaven during the 1930s. The story follows taxi driver Tommy Angelo, who is drawn into organized crime after an unexpected encounter with members of the Salieri crime family. As Tommy rises through the organization, he takes part in increasingly dangerous jobs while becoming more conflicted about the life he has chosen. Missions include shootouts, car chases, bootlegging operations, assassinations and robberies, with the story unfolding across Lost Heaven and the surrounding countryside. Players travel through the city on foot or using period vehicles, with more than 60 cars available throughout the game. Driving uses realistic handling and damage systems, while combat includes pistols, shotguns, rifles, submachine guns and melee weapons. Missions generally combine driving, exploration and combat, with police responding to crimes and traffic violations committed around the city. A separate Free Ride mode allows players to explore Lost Heaven outside the main campaign, find vehicles and weapons, and take part in additional activities without progressing the story.
