01Overview
Mario Kart 8 is a kart racing game where players control characters from the Mario series and compete across colorful tracks using items to gain advantages or disrupt opponents. The game introduces anti-gravity sections that allow racers to drive along walls, ceilings, and other unusual surfaces. Colliding with opponents or certain obstacles during these sections triggers a Spin Turbo boost. Races also feature underwater sections, gliding, motorcycles, and four-wheeled ATVs alongside traditional karts. Players can customize vehicles by combining different bodies, tires, and gliders, with each combination affecting statistics such as speed, acceleration, weight, and handling. The base game includes 32 tracks divided across eight Grand Prix cups, combining new courses with redesigned tracks from earlier Mario Kart games. Additional modes include Time Trials, VS Race, and Battle, which uses modified race courses rather than dedicated arenas. Up to four players can compete locally on one Wii U system. Mario Kart 8 originally supported online races for up to 12 players, although Nintendo ended online services for Wii U software in 2024.
