METRO 2039 is a single-player first-person shooter from 4A Games set in post-apocalyptic Moscow. Twenty-five years after nuclear war forced survivors underground, the Metro has been united under the Novoreich, an authoritarian regime led by the former Spartan Hunter. Players control the Stranger, a recluse haunted by violent waking nightmares who is forced to leave the wilderness and return to the Metro, a place he swore he would never enter again. His journey takes him through ruined Moscow and the underground settlements where survivors live under propaganda, fear, and the threat of a new war for the surface. Gameplay combines exploration, survival, combat, and stealth across handcrafted environments. Metro 2039 returns to the series’ claustrophobic tunnels while also taking players through areas above ground, with hostile mutants and human enemies threatening the Stranger along the way. Environmental storytelling plays a major role, with bodies, objects, and abandoned spaces forming small stories that reveal what happened before the player arrived. The game continues the Metro series with an original story written in collaboration with author Dmitry Glukhovsky.
