Ace Combat 8 Releases First Episode of Live-Action HOUR ZERO Prequel
Bandai Namco has released the first episode of HOUR ZERO, a four-part live-action prequel designed to establish the war and characters surrounding Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve before the game launches in October.
The series follows three people caught in the Republic of Sotoa's invasion of the Federation of Central Usea, showing the conflict through personal perspectives that expand on the war surrounding the game's campaign.
Episode 1 opens with the invasion already unfolding

The first HOUR ZERO episode introduces Holloway's character, a military pilot caught in Central Usea during Sotoa's invasion. Rather than functioning as a live-action recreation of Ace Combat 8's aerial combat, the series is intended to show what the conflict means for people living through its opening stages.
Bandai Namco says the story is being told in reverse, gradually moving toward the moment each character's normal life was disrupted by the war. That structure lets the series reveal more about the people involved while counting down toward the event that puts Central Usea on the path seen in the game.
The approach also gives players additional context for a conflict that will already be well underway when Wings of Theve begins.
Three characters show different sides of the same conflict

Holloway's pilot is only one of the perspectives used in HOUR ZERO. Brandon Routh plays a doctor who saves the life of an enemy soldier, while Tamlyn Tomita plays a news anchor whose attempt to report the truth puts her under pressure.
The three characters are not presented as a squad or a group travelling together. Their stories instead run alongside one another, using different parts of the invasion to build a wider picture of what is happening in Central Usea.
Bandai Namco has positioned those personal stories as the main purpose of the prequel. The series is meant to establish the people affected by the war before Ace Combat 8 shifts the focus back toward military operations and aerial combat.
That also makes HOUR ZERO useful for players entering Ace Combat 8 without extensive knowledge of the series' fictional world, since it introduces the new conflict without requiring a long explanation of previous games.

HOUR ZERO leads directly into Ace Combat 8
Three additional episodes are scheduled to complete the prequel before the game launches. Episode 2 is set for September 17, followed by episodes on September 23 and September 29. The final installment therefore arrives only days before Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve releases on October 2.
The game begins after Sotoa has already devastated much of Central Usea, leaving the country's military badly weakened. Players take the role of Wings of Theve, an ace pilot who becomes a symbol for the remaining resistance.
Rather than repeating that campaign from another medium, HOUR ZERO is filling in the period immediately around the invasion and showing how the wider conflict affected people before the player enters it.
Bandai Namco is using the four episodes as a narrative lead-in, with the final part arriving on September 29 ahead of the game's October 2 general release.
