Nearly 29 years after Castlevania: Symphony of the Night launched on PlayStation, fans have created another way to play it natively on PC. SymphonyRecomp entered open beta on August 2, only weeks after NocturneRecomp delivered a separate fan port based on the later Xbox 360 version, turning a long official absence into a sudden burst of community work.
The two projects may seem similar, but the new release starts from the North American PS1 game that many players still consider the best version. It keeps the original FMV scenes and presentation while adding modern display options, a built-in randomizer, and room for future mods, although the current build is still far from finished.

SymphonyRecomp converts the original PlayStation release into a native program for modern computers instead of running it through an emulator. Players must provide their own legally owned North American copy in BIN and CUE format, since the project does not include Konami's game files, music, artwork, or other protected material.
That starting point separates it from NocturneRecomp, which uses the Xbox Live Arcade release from 2007. The Xbox version made some useful changes, but it removed the opening FMV scenes and later lost the PlayStation ending song. Fans who care about the original presentation now have a project built around the version they remember.
Emulation has already made the game easy to run on PC for years, but a native port gives developers more freedom to improve it. Display settings, input changes, bug fixes, and mod support can be added directly instead of being built on top of old console hardware.

The open beta includes widescreen support that expands the visible area rather than stretching the original picture. A built-in randomizer can also change item placement and progression, giving experienced players a reason to rethink familiar routes through Dracula's castle instead of following the same upgrade path again.
Other options include user-interface scaling, borderless fullscreen, separate controls for music and sound effects, and several quality-of-life settings. Some randomized game files can work with the port as well, although compatibility is still developing.
Larger ideas such as Saturn-exclusive areas, playable Saturn Maria, PSP content, or restored material have not been confirmed. A separate SOTN Decomp project is studying several versions of the game and may support more ambitious work later, but SymphonyRecomp currently stays focused on rebuilding the North American PlayStation release accurately.
SymphonyRecomp has not reached version 1.0, and the developers warn that serious bugs remain possible. Widescreen play can place some effects incorrectly near the edges of the screen, while aspect-ratio changes and mod hooks may create other problems. Players should expect testing and updates rather than a polished final release.
The correct disc files are required, unsupported versions may fail, and anyone looking for a quick download will need to do more preparation than usual. The project is designed for existing owners, not as a free replacement for Konami's missing PC edition.
Konami has brought many older Castlevania games to PC through collections, but Symphony of the Night still has no official Steam release. SymphonyRecomp now gives PS1 fans a promising route forward, while its developers continue fixing bugs, improving compatibility, and preparing the project for a stable version 1.0 that players can trust.
