DragonSword: Awakening Is Steam's New $30 Surprise

July 28, 2026·3 min read

Steam gets plenty of open-world RPGs, but few arrive with the scale of a full-price release while asking only $29.99. DragonSword: Awakening has quickly become one of the store's biggest surprises, reaching more than 23,000 concurrent players and earning a Very Positive rating only days after launch.

Hound13 has built a bright Unreal Engine 5 world filled with mounts, caves, underwater areas, dungeons, flying companions, and a large cast of playable heroes. It carries some of the same "how did they fit all of this in?" feeling that helped Crimson Desert stand out earlier this year.

The $30 Price Changes the First Impression

DragonSword: Awakening began as a live-service RPG in South Korea, but its global Steam version has been rebuilt as a premium game without random character pulls. One purchase opens the full roster and story, which makes its familiar anime RPG systems feel less demanding than they would inside a normal gacha release.

Progression still uses upgrade materials, several currencies, character levels, equipment, and plenty of menu screens, but the next hero is earned through play instead of luck or repeated spending. The structure remains busy, yet the worst pressure connected to this type of game is gone.

Hound13 nearly lost the chance to make that change after former publisher Webzen tried to block the Steam launch. A Seoul court rejected the request shortly before release, allowing the developer to publish the new version itself. That legal fight gives the game's early success a stranger background than most surprise Steam hits.

The World Makes the Scale Feel Real

Players move through fields, cities, hidden caves, old ruins, deep water, and underground rooms while collecting treasure and opening side activities. The bright art style can look simple from a distance, but the world is dense enough to reward leaving the main route.

Teams are built from three heroes who can be swapped during a fight, letting players continue air combos, trigger status effects, and move from one character's skill into another's attack. With 19 heroes available, new party ideas keep appearing as the roster grows.

The result is not as detailed or realistic as Crimson Desert, but both games share a love of putting several ideas into one world. Mounts, flying, familiars, cooking, bosses, co-op raids, puzzles, costumes, and crafting all sit beside the main story. Some activities are lighter than others, though the amount of content is difficult to ignore at this price.

Its Mobile Roots Still Show

The move away from gacha did not remove every part of the game's earlier design. Several reviews have pointed to a slow opening, crowded menus, repeated exploration tasks, and upgrade systems that feel more complicated than a single-player RPG needs. Players who dislike constant materials and character management may find the first hours tiring.

English and Japanese text also carry a clear warning on Steam because generative AI was used to translate some dialogue and outside writing. The game's uneven sentences have already drawn complaints, especially during story scenes where awkward wording can weaken an otherwise lively cast. Hound13 needs a careful editing pass rather than leaving those problems for players to accept.

Even with those rough edges, the early numbers show why DragonSword: Awakening is climbing. It offers fast combat, a large world, and dozens of hours without turning every new character into another payment. The next test is whether Hound13 can improve the writing, simplify the busy systems, and support the game without rebuilding the live-service pressure it removed.
