Free Dungeon Crawler Carl game is now playable online

July 22, 2026·3 min read
Dungeon Crawler Carl fans now have a free online game to try while the book series continues growing beyond the page. Dungeon Crawler World: Aethon Prime is playable in a browser and sends players into a fan-made version of Matt Dinniman’s chaotic LitRPG universe.

The project is not an official game from Dinniman, Aethon Books or any licensed partner. It is free to play online, and players can also connect through Telnet or a MUD client for a more old-school text RPG setup.

Aethon Prime Is A Fan-Made Dungeon

Dungeon Crawler World: Aethon Prime is a text-based multiplayer dungeon game. Players create a crawler, enter the dungeon and use typed commands to move, inspect rooms, talk to characters and fight enemies.

The setup fits Dungeon Crawler Carl’s core idea. The books follow survivors trapped in a deadly alien-run dungeon show, where combat, loot, sponsors, viewers and system messages turn survival into entertainment.

Aethon Prime does not retell Carl and Princess Donut’s story. Instead, it creates a separate fan scenario called Season 847, with players becoming their own crawlers inside a new dungeon broadcast.

The Game Runs In A Browser

The easiest way to play is through the browser client, with no download needed. Players can connect, create a character and start using simple commands such as look, attack, talk and descend.

The game also supports Telnet and MUD clients for players who prefer classic text-based multiplayer RPGs. Most of the experience comes through room descriptions, commands, stats, loot and player choices rather than graphics.

Current Content Includes Two Floors

Aethon Prime is planned around an 18-floor dungeon, but only part of it is open right now. The current version includes the surface, Floor 1 and Floor 2, with later floors planned for future updates.

The early areas include a ruined surface zone, the Shattered Undercroft and the Drowned Markets. The game also includes tick-based combat, skill progression, achievements, loot, saferooms and crawler biscuits.

The Project Is Still Experimental

The project page describes Aethon Prime as an experiment in AI-generated interactive fiction. Its world, rooms, quests, NPCs and systems are mainly built and maintained with AI tools.

That makes it different from a polished licensed game. It is a live fan project, so players should expect rough edges and changes as the dungeon expands.

Aethon Prime arrives while Dungeon Crawler Carl continues gaining attention through books, audiobooks and adaptation plans. The free browser game is not part of that official expansion, but it shows how active the fanbase has become.
