Heroes of the Storm Reveals First New Hero Since 2020
Heroes of the Storm is getting its first new playable hero in nearly six years, with World of Warcraft antagonist Xal'atath joining Blizzard's crossover MOBA on September 28.
Blizzard announced Xal'atath during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony and plans to make her available on the Public Test Realm from September 14. Her arrival ends a lengthy gap in new character releases that stretches back to Hogger, who joined the Nexus in December 2020.
Xal'atath ends a nearly six-year wait for another hero

Hogger became the previous new addition to the Heroes of the Storm roster on December 1, 2020. Blizzard continued updating the game afterward, but no completely new playable character followed during the next several years.
Xal'atath finally breaks that run. Blizzard introduced her as the game's newest Hero rather than a skin, rework, or alternate version of somebody already on the roster.
The timing also makes her a current addition to Blizzard's crossover cast. Xal'atath has become one of the major figures in World of Warcraft's Worldsoul Saga and remains central to the events surrounding Midnight, bringing an active Warcraft antagonist into the Nexus rather than reaching only into the franchise's older history.
The new character is a major shift from Heroes' maintenance years

Xal'atath stands out because Blizzard had previously moved Heroes of the Storm into a much quieter phase of development.
In July 2022, Blizzard said it would support the game in a similar way to longstanding titles such as StarCraft and StarCraft II. Future patches would primarily focus on keeping the client running, fixing bugs, and delivering balance updates when needed, while Blizzard said it had no plans to add new for-purchase content.
Support did not disappear entirely. Blizzard continued releasing balance patches and making changes to existing heroes and battlegrounds, keeping the game playable without regularly expanding its roster.
A completely new hero is a different kind of update. After almost six years without one, Xal'atath represents the clearest expansion of the playable lineup since Blizzard shifted the game toward maintenance-focused support.

Blizzard is leaving the door open for more Heroes content
Blizzard has not announced a return to the release schedule Heroes of the Storm had during its more active years, and Xal'atath alone does not confirm a full revival.
The company did, however, use the reveal to acknowledge the players who continued supporting the game during its quieter period. Blizzard said Xal'atath's arrival was made more special by the community that had continued to "carry the torch" for Heroes of the Storm.
It then teased that there "may be even more to come for Heroes in the future," without announcing another character, roadmap, or expansion.
For now, Xal'atath is the only newly confirmed hero. She is scheduled to enter the PTR on September 14 before joining the live roster on September 28.
