Bungie Delays Marathon Update and Moves Away From Strict Seasonal Schedule

September 16, 2026·4 min read

Bungie has delayed Marathon's next major update from September to December while changing how the extraction shooter will handle large content releases going forward.

Content originally planned for September 22 will now arrive with the Symbiosis update on December 8, giving Bungie more time to work on permanent PvE, a new Runner shell, a redesigned Perimeter experience, and other additions. Players will instead get a smaller refresh on October 6 that resets progression and the economy while Bungie moves away from forcing major updates to meet fixed seasonal deadlines.

September 22 was previously supposed to mark the beginning of Marathon Season 3.

Bungie's earlier roadmap promised major changes to the early-game experience on that date, including new areas and encounters in Perimeter, another Runner shell, weapons, equipment, and additional content. Those plans have now been pushed back and expanded into Symbiosis, which Bungie describes as the first major step in the game's next phase.

The December update will introduce Marathon's first permanent PvE experience, offering another way to play outside its regular PvPvE extraction structure. The experimental Vault Breaker mode has already allowed Bungie to test PvE, but Symbiosis will make it a lasting part of the game rather than a temporary experiment.

Other additions include a refreshed Perimeter, a new social space with a firing range, another Runner shell, improved onboarding for new players, and an experimental Team Deathmatch mode. Bungie says Symbiosis is part of a broader evolution that will continue into March and beyond.

October 6 will reset progression before Symbiosis arrives

Bungie is not leaving the game unchanged until December. The October 6 Nightfall refresh will wipe progression and reset the in-game economy, giving everyone another fresh starting point before the larger update arrives.

Bungie said Season 2 created progression and reward problems that pushed some players into the endgame too quickly while leaving others behind. The studio believes that imbalance made the extraction experience harder to engage with and prevented the seasonal reset from workihttps://zero1gaming.com/news/marathon-vault-breaker-pve-mode-solo-duo-players?utm_source=chatgpt.comng as intended.

The October refresh will introduce a new Rewards Pass alongside quality-of-life changes, balance adjustments, and other live-game improvements. Vault Breaker will also return for a limited period. Bungie plans to use the additional data from that PvE experiment to inform the permanent experience coming with Symbiosis.

The period between the October refresh and December update will be used for more gameplay experiments and development updates rather than another full seasonal content drop.

Major Marathon updates will no longer be tied to seasonal deadlines

The delay also marks a larger change from Bungie's original post-launch plan. Before Marathon released, Bungie said seasons would last roughly three months, with new content, progression changes, and community-wide resets arriving as each new season began. September 22 fit directly into that structure as the planned Season 3 launch.

Bungie now says it is moving away from a strict seasonal schedule for major updates.

Instead of requiring large additions to ship because a fixed seasonal date has arrived, the studio wants more flexibility to build, test, and improve features before releasing them. Bungie says the change follows feedback asking for more depth, stronger progression, greater variety, and better long-term reasons to keep playing.

The announcement does not say that seasons themselves are disappearing. The confirmed change is that major content releases will no longer need to follow the rigid cadence Bungie originally established.

For now, the next major steps are the October 6 Nightfall refresh and the December 8 launch of Symbiosis, with Bungie planning to outline more of Marathon's longer-term direction later this month.
