

A game freeze in Path of Exile 2 can quickly ruin your session, often causing more frustration than a regular crash. When the game locks during a crowded endgame map, players may lose control long enough to die, waste a valuable run, or return to a session that keeps stuttering even after the screen starts moving again.
Grinding Gear Games spent around a year and a half chasing one of those failures on NVIDIA hardware before finding a way to prove it. The studio eventually built a replay that triggered the problem every few minutes, then shipped the exact PC setup to NVIDIA so its driver team could see the same bug without changing a single variable.

The problem appeared on NVIDIA graphics cards using newer drivers, especially during long DirectX 12 sessions and demanding endgame encounters. Earlier versions could crash the GPU completely, while later recovery work kept the client open by reloading textures, shaders, and engine data. Players still faced long pauses and weaker performance after the game recovered.
Normal bug reports did not give NVIDIA enough to work with because the failure refused to appear on command. Telling engineers to run high-level maps for several hours was not a useful test, and short internal sessions often ended without a crash. The studio needed a way to repeat the same heavy gameplay under the same conditions.
Grinding Gear Games added more engine tracking and created an internal replay system that could run recorded sessions automatically. After months of testing, one machine began producing the failure every five to seven minutes. That changed the investigation from a collection of player complaints into a clear test that another team could run and study.

The replay still did not fail on every system, so moving only the files risked losing the one setup that worked. Grinding Gear Games packed the PC, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and replay package together and sent the whole rig to NVIDIA. Keeping the hardware unchanged removed doubts about settings, peripherals, or a small difference between test machines.
With the same setup in hand, NVIDIA traced the problem to the size of its driver shader heap. Increasing that limit stopped the repeated long pauses, and the fix is included in Game Ready Driver 610.88. Some players on driver 610.47 received the change earlier through an automatic rollout, but 610.88 is the clear version to install now.
The driver update arrived alongside Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.4e, which also improves shader loading, reduces shader size, and fixes slow shader recovery under Vulkan. The patch disables Steam's Fossilize Vulkan layer as well, preventing the shader cache from growing far beyond what the game needs during extended play.
NVIDIA users should update the game and install driver 610.88 before returning to demanding maps. The first few sessions may load more slowly because old shaders need to rebuild as different areas, enemies, and effects appear again. That short delay is expected and should settle once the cache fills with fresh data.
This fix targets one specific driver failure, not every technical problem in Path of Exile 2. Busy builds can still hit frame drops, crowded encounters may remain demanding, and unrelated crashes can still happen on some systems. Players who continue seeing Device Removed errors or long shader pauses should report their hardware and logs to Grinding Gear Games.
For endgame players, removing this one freeze is still a major improvement because several seconds without control can ruin an expensive map or kill a character before the screen recovers. The unusual part of the story was not simply mailing NVIDIA a computer. It was building the tool that made an impossible bug happen on schedule.
