Terranigma Gets Its First North American Release After 31 Years

August 25, 2026·3 min read

Terranigma is returning in 2027, giving the acclaimed Super Nintendo action RPG its first official North American release more than three decades after its original debut. Clear River Games announced the revival during the Pixel Arcadia showcase on August 24.

The new version is coming to Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and GOG. Clear River Games is targeting early 2027, with both digital and physical releases planned.

North America missed Terranigma when it launched in the 1990s

Quintet originally developed Terranigma for the Super Famicom, with Enix publishing the game in Japan in 1995. An English-language version followed in Europe and Australia in 1996, but the RPG never received an official North American release.

It also remained unavailable on later platforms. While other RPGs from the 16-bit era eventually found new audiences through ports, remasters, and digital releases, Terranigma stayed tied to its original hardware.

The 2027 revival changes both of those things. North American players will be able to buy the game officially for the first time, while existing fans will be able to play it officially on modern hardware.

The new version keeps the original game while adding modern upgrades

Clear River Games is bringing back Terranigma with its pixel-art presentation and action RPG combat intact, while adding upgrades, tweaks, and bonus features for modern platforms. More details about those additions will be announced later.

The original game follows Ark, a young man from the underground village of Crysta who opens a forbidden door and sets off a chain of events connected to the restoration of Earth. His journey takes him through a world divided between the internal Darkside and external Lightside.

Combat happens in real time, with Ark using a spear to perform thrusts, jumping attacks, dashes, and other moves while enemies remain active around him. That faster approach separated Terranigma from many of the turn-based JRPGs released during the same period.

Original artist Kamui Fujiwara is involved in Terranigma's return

Manga artist Kamui Fujiwara, who worked on the original game's characters, world, and visual identity, is involved with the new release. He is contributing new key artwork and in-game designs while providing feedback during development.

Clear River Games is developing the new version in cooperation with Square Enix. Steam lists Clear River Games AB and Limited Run Games as publishers for the PC release.

An exact launch date has not been announced. For a game that went from its 1995 Japanese debut to more than 30 years without another release, the bigger change is already set: Terranigma will be available on modern platforms in 2027, including North America for the first time.
