Modder brings multiplayer to The Last of Us Part II

June 24, 2026·4 min read
The Last of Us fans have been waiting a long time for multiplayer to come back. The first game’s Factions mode turned quiet movement, quick crafting, and desperate shootouts into tense matches where every supply is important. That idea always felt like it could work even better with The Last of Us Part II’s heavier combat and larger spaces.

Naughty Dog never released that version, but modder Speclizer is now building something close to PC. The fan-made multiplayer mod is still early, but recent footage shows several players in the same world, synced movement, working actions, and early PvP tests.

Factions left a gap fans still talk about

There's a clear reason why this mod has caught people's attention. Factions was not just an extra mode in the original The Last of Us. It had its own pace, built around sneaking, listening, crafting, and choosing the right moment to attack.

When The Last of Us Part II launched without multiplayer, fans expected Naughty Dog to follow up later. The studio was working on a larger online project for the series, but that game was eventually cancelled before players got to try it.

The Last of Us Part II has the movement, combat, weapons, and tense arenas that seem ready for online play, but the official mode never arrived.

Speclizer’s mod is still being built

Speclizer’s project is not a finished multiplayer release, and it should not be treated like a full replacement for Naughty Dog’s cancelled game. It is a PC mod in development, with rough edges and many systems still being tested.

The mod already shows players sharing the same space, moving around together, swapping weapons, using prone movement, vaulting, and testing combat against each other. Those are basic pieces, but they are important pieces.

Multiplayer is difficult because the game has to keep every player’s actions lined up. Movement, weapons, items, damage, enemy behavior, and objects in the world all need to work for more than one person at the same time. Specialized is slowly solving those problems in public, which is why fans are paying attention.

Naughty Dog’s cancelled project still hangs over it

This mod also brings back memories of The Last of Us Online. Naughty Dog cancelled that project in 2023, saying the game had grown large enough that supporting it would have pulled the studio away from the single-player story games it is known for.

That explanation made sense, but it did not make the loss feel smaller. Many players still wanted a modern Factions-style mode, especially after seeing how good The Last of Us Part II felt in combat.

Speclizer’s work is much smaller than an official live-service game, but that is part of why it stands out. It shows how much interest is still there, even without PlayStation pushing the idea forward.

Co-op could be just as exciting as PvP

A lot of fans think about multiplayer as PvP because of Factions, but The Last of Us Part II also feels ready for co-op. No Return already proved that the game’s combat can work in short survival runs, with pressure coming from enemies, limited supplies, and bad choices.

Adding another player to that kind of setup could change the whole rhythm. One person could draw attention while the other flanks. Players could share supplies, revive each other, or panic together when a plan falls apart.

PvP would fit the series, but co-op may be the stronger dream for many fans now. The world of The Last of Us is already dangerous enough without needing every threat to come from another player.

Expectations should stay realistic

Speclizer’s mod is exciting because it gives fans something real to watch, but it is still unofficial. It may remain limited, rough, or only useful for players comfortable with PC mods.

Still, the reaction says a lot about what fans miss. Players never stopped wanting multiplayer in The Last of Us Part II. They just stopped expecting PlayStation to deliver it.

If Speclizer keeps making progress, the PC version could end up with the kind of multiplayer experiment fans hoped to see years ago.
