The Witcher 4 Already Runs on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X, CD Projekt Says

CD Projekt Red says The Witcher 4 is already running on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X as the studio changes how it develops games following the troubled console launch of Cyberpunk 2077.
Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski told Game Developer that CD Projekt Red now keeps its games working across their target platforms throughout development instead of building primarily for PC and dealing with console problems later.
Nowakowski said developers can currently launch The Witcher 4 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
The approach is different from Cyberpunk 2077, which he said was developed with a strong focus on PC while the studio pushed for the best visuals it could achieve. CD Projekt believed bringing that version down to console hardware would not be particularly difficult, but Nowakowski said that assumption proved wrong.
Keeping the game running across its target hardware gives the team a chance to find platform-specific problems while development is still underway.
CD Projekt has also changed what happens when one version of the game misses a technical target.
Nowakowski explained that the studio previously allowed some unfinished technical work to carry into later milestones, expecting the team to catch up. Unresolved problems could then accumulate as development continued.
With The Witcher 4, the team stops and addresses a problem when something is not working properly on one platform instead of leaving it for later.
Cyberpunk 2077 launched in 2020 with serious technical problems on consoles, particularly PS4 and Xbox One. Sony later removed the game from the PlayStation Store before restoring it in 2021 after months of updates.
Nowakowski said CD Projekt had encountered similar platform challenges while developing The Witcher 3 but "got a bit lucky here and there." That experience contributed to the studio believing the same approach would work again with Cyberpunk 2077.
The studio is no longer willing to rely on that assumption. "Since then, we don't take chances," Nowakowski said. "We want to be sure that it actually works."
