Pokémon Legends: Z-A is an action RPG developed by Game Freak and set entirely within Lumiose City, where an urban redevelopment plan is underway to shape the city into a place that belongs to both people and Pokémon. Players arrive as a visitor and stay at Hotel Z, which becomes their base while they explore the city, meet new characters and uncover the mysteries surrounding Lumiose and Mega Evolution. During the day, players can explore designated wild zones, battle and catch Pokémon, train their team and discover different parts of the city. Battles take place in real time for the first time in the Pokémon RPG series, allowing Trainers and their Pokémon to move freely while factors such as positioning, move range and timing affect each encounter. At night, special battle zones appear across Lumiose as part of the Z-A Royale. Players begin at Rank Z and work toward Rank A by defeating other Trainers and completing promotion matches. Mega Evolution also plays a major role in combat, allowing compatible Pokémon to temporarily transform and gain additional power during battle.
