Project Zomboid is a hardcore zombie survival RPG where players try to survive for as long as possible in a large open world overrun by the undead. Alone or in multiplayer, players loot buildings, gather food and supplies, craft equipment, build and fortify shelters, farm, fish, and fight when escape is no longer an option. Survival requires managing hunger, thirst, fatigue, injuries, illness, body temperature, and other physical conditions. Zombies react to sight and sound, making noise, lighting, and visibility important when moving through populated areas. Vehicles provide transportation and storage but require fuel, maintenance, and replacement parts. Characters are created with occupations, traits, and skills that affect their strengths and weaknesses. Skills improve through use and include areas such as carpentry, cooking, mechanics, farming, and combat. Death is permanent for the current character, although players can continue in the same world with a new survivor. Custom Sandbox settings allow zombie behavior, loot availability, weather, infection, and many other rules to be adjusted. Project Zomboid also supports persistent multiplayer servers, local split-screen co-op, and community-created mods through Steam Workshop.
