01Overview

Sea of Thieves is a first-person multiplayer action-adventure game in which players take on the role of pirates exploring a shared open-world ocean. Crews sail Sloops, Brigantines, or Galleons, with ships supporting up to two, three, or four players respectively. Players steer, manage sails, fire cannons, repair damage, and bail water while traveling between islands. Voyages for Trading Companies send crews hunting buried treasure, transporting cargo, fighting skeletons, and completing other objectives. On the High Seas, other player crews can appear at any time and may cooperate, form alliances, steal treasure, or attack. The world also contains Forts, shipwrecks, sea creatures, world events, and story-focused Tall Tales. Safer Seas provides a private environment for a single crew, allowing players to explore and tackle much of the game without encounters with rival crews. Progression centers on earning gold, reputation, Commendations, titles, and cosmetic rewards rather than increasing a pirate’s combat stats, so experienced players do not gain stronger base weapons or abilities simply through leveling. Sailing, cooperation, naval combat, treasure hunting, and unpredictable encounters with other crews remain the core of the game.
