Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is an action-adventure game set in a reimagined late 1500s Sengoku-era Japan. Players control Wolf, a shinobi on a mission to rescue his kidnapped lord and take revenge on his enemies. Combat emphasizes precise sword fighting, stealth, and mobility, with battles built around attacking and deflecting to break an opponent’s Posture before delivering a finishing blow. Wolf’s prosthetic arm can equip tools such as the Loaded Shuriken, Flame Vent, and Loaded Axe, providing additional options against different enemies. A grappling hook allows rapid movement between rooftops, cliffs, and other elevated positions. Wolf can approach many encounters through direct combat or stealth, using vertical routes and environmental cover to eliminate enemies before being detected. After death, the Resurrection mechanic can return him to the fight under certain conditions rather than immediately sending him back to a checkpoint. Progression comes through unlocking combat skills, improving health and Posture with Prayer Beads, upgrading the Healing Gourd, and enhancing prosthetic tools. Exploration connects temples, castles, valleys, villages, and hidden areas containing bosses, characters, and optional encounters.
