01Overview

Terraria is a 2D sandbox action-adventure game with platforming and role-playing elements. Players create a character and enter a procedurally generated world where they mine resources, craft equipment, build structures, explore underground areas, and fight enemies. Progression is driven largely by defeating bosses, which can unlock new items, events, enemies, and eventually Hardmode, a major shift that introduces stronger threats and additional resources. Character roles are determined by equipment rather than a fixed class, with weapons and armor supporting melee, ranged, magic, and summoner builds. Worlds contain varied biomes, hidden structures, treasure, and increasingly dangerous areas to explore. NPCs can move into player-built housing after specific requirements are met, providing shops and other services that expand as progression continues. Crafting ranges from basic tools and weapons to advanced equipment and complex building materials, while wiring allows players to create traps, mechanisms, and automated systems. Terraria supports both single-player and multiplayer worlds. On PC, tModLoader is available separately as a community-driven modding platform for creating and playing custom Terraria content.
