What Remains of Edith Finch is a collection of short stories about a supposedly cursed family in Washington State. Players follow Edith Finch as she returns to the enormous family home, explores its sealed rooms, and tries to understand why she is the last Finch left alive. Letters, diaries, photographs, and personal objects open playable memories spanning from the early 1900s to the present day. Each story offers a chance to experience the life of a different family member, and each ends with that person’s death, gradually assembling the family’s history and its explanations for the curse. Every story is played from a first-person perspective, but its gameplay, visual presentation, and tone reflect the family member at its center. Individual sequences use different controls and formats to represent ordinary routines, childhood imagination, personal memories, and surreal versions of tragic events. Between these stories, Edith examines rooms preserved after their occupants died and follows hidden passages through the Finch house. Her handwritten narration appears within the environment as she records what she finds. Progress depends on exploration, observation, and simple interactions rather than combat or conventional puzzles, keeping the focus on how each story adds to Edith’s understanding of her family.
