01Overview
Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a first-person survival horror game that follows Daniel, a man who wakes inside the abandoned Castle Brennenburg with little memory of his past. As he explores the castle, Daniel gradually uncovers what brought him there and why he is being hunted. Players search rooms and corridors, solve environmental puzzles, collect notes and manage limited supplies while avoiding hostile creatures. Daniel cannot fight back directly, so survival depends on hiding, running and finding safe routes through dangerous areas. Darkness is a constant threat because spending too long without light damages Daniel’s sanity, causing visual and audio distortions that make exploration more difficult. Players can use tinderboxes to light candles and torches or carry an oil-powered lantern, but both resources are limited. Many puzzles rely on the game’s physics system, allowing objects, doors and machinery to be manipulated directly. The story unfolds through exploration, written documents and recovered memories, with player actions near the end influencing which conclusion Daniel reaches.
