ARK: Survival Evolved is an open-world survival game in which players awaken stranded on a mysterious island filled with dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. Survival begins with gathering basic resources, crafting tools, hunting for food and building shelter before progressing to stronger weapons, armor and structures. Players must manage hunger, thirst, temperature and other survival needs while exploring forests, mountains, caves and underwater areas. Many creatures can be hunted, captured or tamed, with larger animals serving as mounts, resource gatherers, defenders or combat companions. Progression is built around gaining experience and unlocking Engrams, which provide recipes for new equipment, structures and technology ranging from primitive tools to advanced firearms and machinery. Tamed creatures can be bred to produce new generations with inherited traits, while farming and resource production support larger settlements. The game can be played alone or on multiplayer servers where players form tribes, build shared bases, trade resources or fight rival groups. Exploration also leads to caves, artifacts, bosses and story elements that reveal more about the ARKs and the world surrounding them.
