Final Fantasy VII Revelation: Everything We Know So Far
A flyable Highwind and a more flexible party promise freedom across the planet, while Square Enix commits to one ending for Cloud's story.
The Highwind gives Final Fantasy VII Revelation a difficult balancing act. Players will be able to fly across the world and parachute toward destinations of their choosing, even as Cloud's party races to prevent its destruction. The final remake installment has to make that freedom fit a story approaching its most urgent moments.
Square Enix's announcements suggest that character choice is the connection. Exploration, combat roles and certain quests all give players more control over the group accompanying Cloud. Those systems could make the journey toward Sephiroth feel personal, provided the expanded world leaves enough room for the characters to hold its center.
The finale launches on April 8, 2027
Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches on April 8, 2027, simultaneously for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. The PC release includes Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC. Square Enix confirmed the date during the September 3 State of Play, following the game's unveiling at Summer Game Fest in June. It is the third and final installment of the remake trilogy, continuing the story after Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Square Enix's release announcement confirms the platforms and date.
The Highwind opens the planet, and Wutai gives it height

The Highwind is a controllable airship, with parachuting allowing the party to move from flight to ground exploration. Square Enix describes an explorable planet, and the map is larger than Rebirth's. This changes how players approach destinations, allowing them to choose where to descend instead of simply following a route across the ground. The GamesRadar explainer covers the announced traversal systems.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi has said the airship arrives roughly five to six hours into the game. Areas have recommended levels, with difficulty guidance applying to smaller zones rather than entire regions. According to his GamesRadar interview, physical barriers will not prevent players from entering those areas. Access therefore comes with the possibility of finding enemies the party cannot comfortably handle.
Wutai, Yuffie's homeland, is among the confirmed destinations. Its vertical streets and buildings give the new grappling gun a purpose beyond crossing empty space. Nintendo World Report's preview describes rooftop traversal, martial arts activities and a politically tense arrival involving soldiers burning books.
The same preview found MAI's frequent quest updates intrusive. That is one writer's experience with a limited demo, but it identifies a specific risk: freedom to travel can still feel restrictive when the game constantly interrupts to assign another task. Nintendo World Report's hands-on preview provides both observations.
Cid, Vincent and FITS expand how the party fights

Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine become fully playable, joining Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Yuffie, Red XIII and Cait Sith. The returning battle system combines real-time action with tactical command selection, while synergy attacks continue to let companions coordinate their offense. Square Enix's gameplay description confirms the returning combat foundation and new playable companions.
Cid's spear and aerial abilities give him a distinct role above the battlefield. Vincent mixes ranged attacks with close combat, and a brief Galian Beast transformation has appeared in hands-on coverage. Their appeal depends on those differences surviving the expanded customization, so choosing Vincent still means something beyond choosing whoever has the strongest equipment. Nintendo World Report's combat impressions describe both characters in action.
The new customization layer is FITS, or Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear. Square Enix has detailed four specialized roles: Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner. These outfits change abilities and appearance, with the gameplay demonstration showing Cid using Knight and Vincent using Summoner. Players can also switch their controlled character during exploration and choose who undertakes certain quests. Those selections can alter the resulting scenarios. Square Enix's gameplay breakdown explains the changes.
FITS can only be changed between battles. Hamaguchi says adding job changes during combat would overcomplicate a system already built around switching characters. His example of Black Mage Cloud retains close-range fighting while adding ranged magic. That makes FITS a way to broaden a character's options without discarding their existing strengths. Hamaguchi's combat interview establishes that limitation.
Knights of the Round must justify the preparation
Knights of the Round is confirmed as both a summon and a boss encounter, with the 13 knights standing between players and their power. Hamaguchi told MinnMax that the summon's strength in the original informed the team's ambition for a formidable opponent. Combat director Teruki Endo considered the initial version insufficiently challenging, prompting a meeting involving directors responsible for areas including art and motion, followed by a rebuild. GamesRadar's report on the interview recounts that decision.
The broader endgame follows a related principle. Hamaguchi has said Weapon battles should primarily test the characters players have developed, although portions may introduce minigame elements. His discussion of the endgame emphasizes the established RPG combat. That is the right target for a finale adding more ways to build a party. A demanding encounter gives those decisions a purpose, but difficulty alone will not establish whether the redesigned Knights are satisfying to fight.
Queen's Blood returns with a Red XIII storyline
Queen's Blood has a new campaign centered on Red XIII, with additional opponents and challenges that change how matches unfold. Away from the card table, Piko returns as both a chocobo mount and a combat ally, gaining traversal and battle capabilities alongside the party. Square Enix's September gameplay update confirms both. Giving familiar activities a character connection could help them feel like part of this journey, although their frequency and placement will determine whether they support its pace.
Player choices change the approach to one ending

The story follows Cloud's companions as they confront Sephiroth and the threat of Meteor. Hamaguchi identifies resolve as the central theme, with individual characters preparing for the final battle. The premise places the group's personal commitments alongside a crisis affecting the whole planet. GamesRadar's story summary collects those announced details.
Choices will affect the approach and depth of certain character moments, but Revelation has one ending. Hamaguchi has explicitly ruled out multiple endings determined by player decisions. That distinction leaves room for different emotional experiences without promising separate final outcomes, and it does not reveal how closely the conclusion follows the 1997 game. His explanation of the choice system establishes the boundary.
The wider compilation also remains relevant. Hamaguchi has described incorporating settings and concepts from works including Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core, with further compilation characters expected to appear. That establishes the creative direction without confirming every proposed cameo or fan theory. His comments at a Shanghai Q&A explain the approach.
Story DLC and physical editions are already announced
The standard edition costs $69.99. Digital Premium and Premium Plus editions cost $99.99 and $109.99, respectively, and include the Story Expansion Pass and 24-hour early access. Two DLCs focus on Sephiroth and Vincent & the Turks, with releases planned between winter 2027 and spring 2028. Square Enix also lists an $84.99 digital Trilogy Edition. Existing Remake Intergrade and Rebirth saves unlock summon materia and weapon-skin bonuses. The official edition announcement lists these inclusions and planned windows.
Physical copies require downloads. PS5 and Xbox editions need additional game data, while Switch 2 uses a Game-Key Card. The Switch 2 listing specifies at least 130 GB of available storage for the download. Buying a box therefore still requires planning for installation and an internet connection. Square Enix's store listing states those requirements.
The finale has to make freedom serve the characters

The most promising connection between these announcements is how often they return control to the player: where to travel, who leads a quest and how each companion fights. Those decisions could make the final confrontation feel like the result of a particular journey through the planet.
Wutai's reported interruptions show how easily that promise could become exhausting. Revelation's challenge is to give players reasons to explore while preserving the urgency of the people they are traveling with. The Highwind can open the entire map. The writing and pacing must make each chosen stop worth the diversion.
