GTA VI: Everything You Need to Know

June 29, 2026·12 min read
One of the most anticipated game releases in history is almost here. Over 12 years of waiting and two postponed release dates later, GTA VI is finally on the horizon, bringing with it the sunny and beloved Vice City. We have to wait until November 2026 for Rockstar Games' latest production. The date is confirmed, we have seen the cover art, the trailers, and pre-orders are already available.
The history of GTA VI has been full of twists. The game was originally supposed to hit shelves in 2025, then the release was moved to May of that year, before finally being set for November. There are no signs of any further delays, and we now have a solid amount of knowledge about this long-awaited game. Below we present the most important information about GTA VI, including the release date, price, gameplay details, and all confirmed information.

Key Facts About GTA VI

  • Release date for PS5 and Xbox Series: November 19, 2026
  • PC release date: no confirmed date (2027 at the earliest)
  • Game price: Standard Edition $79.99, GTA VI Ultimate Edition $99.99
  • Game setting: Vice City (inspired by Florida and Miami)
  • Protagonists: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos

How Much Does GTA VI Cost?

Does the price of GTA VI knock you off your feet? Not quite, but it is higher than the established standard, which raises concerns among players about setting new pricing trends. Rockstar Games is asking $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. For AAA games, the standard price was $59.99 for many years, and only recently have top publishers like Sony, EA, and Microsoft raised it to $69.99. Rockstar has raised the bar by another $10.
The lack of a physical disc has also caused some stir. The boxed version contains only a download code, with no disc included. This is a significant blow for collectors who prefer to own games in physical form. There is currently no confirmed information about whether a disc version will be available at launch or after.

Where to Buy GTA VI Pre-Orders?

Rockstar Games
GTA VI pre-orders have been available since June 25, 2026. Rockstar opened pre-orders simultaneously on digital platforms and at select physical retailers. Digitally, you can order the game directly from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, or Rockstar Games Store. If you prefer a physical copy, it is available at most major retailers, including Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and Target.
There is one important limitation to keep in mind. The Ultimate Edition is only available through official digital stores. Game pre-loading starts on November 12, one week before launch. This applies to both the digital and physical versions. The box contains a code that enables early downloading of the game.

GTA VI: Standard Edition vs. Ultimate Edition

With two versions of GTA VI available, the most important question arises. Is the Ultimate Edition worth the extra $20? Below we will outline the contents of the Standard Edition and the expanded version, so you can decide for yourself whether it is worth the additional spend.
The Standard Edition contains the full story campaign and the pre-order bonus Vintage Vice City Pack for everyone who orders the game before November 20, 2026. This is everything you need to complete the story from start to finish. The Vintage Vice City Pack includes the unique '55 Vapid Stanier car, exclusive outfits and hairstyles for the protagonists, additional weapon skins, and a free month of GTA+.
The Ultimate Edition costs $99.99. What does a player get additionally in the more expensive version?
Vehicles and garages, including the '67 Vapid Dominator Buggy with a garage in Watson Bay, the '95 Grotti Cheetah, and the Shitzu Squalo boat.
Unique weapons, including the personalized Girardi ES9 and Klose K17 pistols, as well as two revolvers sourced from the estate of GTA Vice City protagonist Tommy Vercetti.
Additional shops and businesses not available in the standard edition. The most notable are Rideout Customs in Vice City, One-Eyed Willie's in Lake Leonida, Sara's Unisex Salon, Stock 305, and Electric Fang Tattoo.
The Ultimate Edition also includes exclusive missions not available in the cheaper version, as well as exclusive outfits, tattoos, and mods for one of the protagonists' pickup truck.

GTA VI: History of Release Delays

The road to GTA VI's official release date has not been straightforward. Two delays, a high-profile labor scandal, and nearly three years from the first trailer to the moment players will finally be able to launch the game.
In December 2023, Rockstar officially announced GTA VI by releasing the first trailer. The footage broke a YouTube record, reaching 475 million views within 24 hours. The studio simultaneously announced a general release window of 2025. In May 2024, Take-Two narrowed it down to the fall of that year, with CEO Strauss Zelnick assuring everyone that he felt confident the schedule would be met without delays.
The calm did not last long. On May 2, 2025, Rockstar published an official statement that the game would not make its fall 2025 target, with the new date set as May 26, 2026. Take-Two shares dropped by approximately 5% following the announcement. That same day, the studio softened the blow with an unexpected drop of Trailer 2 and 70 new screenshots.
More problems arrived on October 30, 2025. Rockstar fired 34 employees from its British and Canadian studios. The official reason given was a breach of confidentiality. Protests took place outside Rockstar North's headquarters in Edinburgh, and the matter was taken to parliament and the Employment Tribunal. A week later, on November 6, 2025, another date change was announced. The studio confirmed that the premiere would take place on November 19, 2026. This further delay also had an impact on Take-Two's share price.
This time, however, all signs point to November 2026 being the final release date. Rockstar has finally accelerated its marketing campaign. We have received the cover art, game prices, pre-order options, and more details about the game.

The First Female Protagonist. Who Are Jason and Lucia?

Lucia trains with a heavy punching bag in a gym in Grand Theft Auto VI, showcasing her fighting skills and determination.
Rockstar Games
GTA VI introduces a female protagonist for the first time in the history of the series. Lucia Caminos is a character who has already stirred considerable emotion before the game's release. Two camps have formed among fans, divided between those enthusiastic about the change and those more skeptical of Rockstar's new direction. The game features a duo in the form of Jason and Lucia, who serve as the main protagonists in the style of Bonnie and Clyde. This is only the second game after GTA V to feature more than one protagonist.
Lucia comes from Liberty City and first appears on screen in an orange prison jumpsuit. The opening scenes of the trailer show her behind bars at Leonida State Prison. After her release, she enters Jason's orbit and gets caught up in a criminal conspiracy spanning the entire state of Leonida. Jason, meanwhile, grew up in difficult circumstances and came into contact with the criminal world as a teenager. He later joined the military, an experience that left a clear mark on him. After returning from the army, he went back to the wrong side of the law, earning money as an enforcer for drug dealers in the Leonida Keys.
The pair end up at the center of a dangerous conspiracy after an apparently easy score goes wrong. From that point on, Jason and Lucia must rely on each other to survive. Trailer 2 hints at a romantic dimension to their relationship, though Rockstar has not officially confirmed any story details. Each character has their own unique gameplay mechanics. Jason has the ability to slow down time with precise targeting of enemy weak points, while Lucia can activate a single-shot slow-motion mode. This is not merely a cosmetic difference, as the choice of active character genuinely affects the approach to missions.
Around the main duo, Rockstar has built a colorful supporting cast. Cal Hampton is Jason's friend, slightly paranoid and most at home with a beer and the Coast Guard radio in the background. Boobie Ike is a local Vice City legend who managed to turn street life into a real empire, owning a strip club, recording studio, and real estate. Dre'Quan Priest rounds out the trio. He is an aspiring rapper and a man of action rather than a gangster by name.

A Nostalgic Return to Vice City

A passenger jet flies over the iconic Vice City sign at sunset in Grand Theft Auto VI, highlighting the game's modern urban setting.
Rockstar Games
GTA VI returns to Vice City, one of the most iconic locations in gaming history. Fans of the series remember it from the 2002 classic GTA Vice City, set in the atmosphere of the 1980s. This time Rockstar is approaching it in a completely different way. Vice City returns as a modern metropolis, and the city itself is just one part of a much larger world: the fictional state of Leonida, modeled on Florida.
Rockstar has officially confirmed six regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Mount Kalaga, Port Gellhorn, and Ambrosia. This is not a game set in a single city, but across an entire state. The map is expected to be the most geographically diverse in the history of the series.
Rockstar has not provided official map dimensions for GTA VI, but the community estimates it could be up to twice the size of the GTA V map. If these reports prove accurate, Leonida will be the largest open world Rockstar has ever built. The real innovation in GTA VI is expected to be world density. Every square kilometer is set to be filled with significantly more interactive elements, NPCs, and accessible buildings than in previous entries.

GTA VI Gameplay Mechanics

Law enforcement vehicles and a helicopter pursue suspects through the Everglades wetlands in Grand Theft Auto VI, with an alligator visible in the water.
Rockstar Games
Rockstar has not yet released a full gameplay trailer, but two official trailers and pre-order descriptions already paint a clear picture of what to expect. The character-switching system familiar from GTA V returns, this time with a greater emphasis on cooperation as a duo. Jason and Lucia carry out many missions together, and each has unique combat abilities.
The combat system has been thoroughly redesigned. New stealth mechanics include crawling, restraining enemies with zip ties, and using opponents as human shields. The police behave more intelligently and in a more coordinated manner than in GTA V, while NPCs have their own routines and react to events in the game world. Another new feature is the integration of social media. The in-game phone allows players to follow influencers and discover hidden side missions.

GTA VI Online. Latest Information

GTA Online will be a separate product from GTA VI, which launches in November as a story mode experience. With GTA V, the multiplayer component arrived two weeks after launch. For the latest entry, no official date has been announced.
Items acquired in GTA V Online will not carry over to the new version. There is talk behind the scenes of minor rewards for players with significant time invested in the previous multiplayer, but these remain speculation for now. Rockstar has officially confirmed a partnership with NoPixel, the largest RP server for GTA V, which suggests that roleplay will be an integral part of the GTA VI Online ecosystem.

GTA VI Trailers. Official Information

Rockstar released the first GTA VI trailer on December 4, 2023, a day ahead of the planned date due to the footage leaking online. The result exceeded all expectations, gathering 90 million views on YouTube within 24 hours. The trailer, set to "Love Is a Long Road" by Tom Petty, confirmed the return to Vice City, introduced the state of Leonida, and revealed Lucia as a protagonist.
The second trailer arrived on May 6, 2025, just days after the announcement of the first delay. Rockstar used it to soften the blow and hit the mark perfectly, reaching 475 million views across all platforms within 24 hours and breaking the record set by Deadpool and Wolverine. The footage revealed the full names of both characters, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, and for the first time showed their shared story in a form close to gameplay, captured on a standard PS5.
Trailer 3 does not yet have an official date. Take-Two has only confirmed that the marketing campaign will accelerate in summer 2026. Players are counting on this trailer to finally show full gameplay, including missions, driving, and heist mechanics. For now, it remains the biggest unknown ahead of launch.

Graphics and Technical Details in GTA VI

Boats, yachts, and jet skis gather for a lively party on the water in Grand Theft Auto VI, highlighting the vibrant coastal lifestyle of Vice City.
Rockstar Games
GTA VI is powered by a new iteration of Rockstar's engine, unofficially referred to by the community as RAGE 9. The central technical element is lighting based on Ray-Traced Global Illumination. The neon signs of Ocean Drive reflect precisely in puddles, on car hoods, and even on characters' skin.
The engine also supports strand-based hair rendering, procedural object generation, advanced water simulation, and detailed vegetation systems. World density is another significant leap forward. RAGE 9 completely abandons traditional rasterized lighting in favor of RTGI and substantially increases the density of simulated crowds while maintaining frame stability.

GTA VI: What We Still Do Not Know

GTA VI has a confirmed release date and two editions, but the list of open questions remains long. We do not know the PC release date, official prices in local currencies outside the US and EU, or whether a Collector's Edition will appear. The online mode has no confirmed launch date. We also do not know what will specifically be included in GTA VI Online, when the old GTA V Online will be discontinued, or whether long-time players will receive any loyalty bonus.
On the technical side, Rockstar has not announced target frame rates or graphics modes for any platform. Campaign length, mission structure, and a potential co-op mode in the story remain unknown. Trailer 3, which is expected to finally show full gameplay, has no official date. We are waiting.
