Novus Inceptio's return shows how Early Access can overwhelm one developer

October 13, 2026·6 min read

Novus Inceptio is being developed again after years of limited progress. Solo developer Martin Markus Mastný says Early Access pressure, constant feedback and trying to satisfy every player contributed to his burnout.

Novus Inceptio entered Steam Early Access in 2015 with ambitious plans for exploration, building and deep crafting systems. Development slowed heavily around 2018, leaving much of that work unfinished and players waiting for years.

On October 5, 2026, developer Martin Markus Mastný returned with a major overhaul of the world and several underlying systems. He has also explained what happened during the long gap, describing how player feedback, reviews and the pressure to keep changing the game gradually led to burnout.

Mastný is working on Novus Inceptio again, but avoiding the same pressure will be just as important as finishing the systems players have been waiting for.

Rebuilding Novus meant returning to its original world

Update 0.60.008 brings back the original 64-square-kilometer wilderness as Novus Inceptio's main world. The smaller hand-built map from 2017 remains available as the Old World, but Mastný no longer plans to expand it.

Maintaining that smaller map had become too much work for one developer. Individual locations often needed manual changes, while the restored world now uses rebuilt generation tools that can apply adjustments to vegetation and other shared data across the entire landscape.

The game itself has changed substantially too. Mastný moved it from Unity 5 through Unity 2019 to Unity 2022, while rebuilding controls, saving and combat. Bows now provide ranged attacks, and enemies no longer scale up simply because the player equips better gear, so upgrades finally feel like upgrades.

Old saves can be converted, although Mastný recommends starting fresh to experience the new progression. Money and powerful equipment can carry over, which lets established characters skip much of the early game.

The Old World will now receive fixes only when an issue affects the wider game, while the old Steam branch will no longer be maintained. With development back in motion, Mastný is narrowing the number of versions he has to support instead of trying to keep every past iteration alive.

Trying to satisfy everyone weakened the game

Mastný originally built Novus Inceptio as a slow, complicated survival game for himself and players with similar tastes. Gathering and crafting were meant to be learned through experimentation. Even something as simple as a tree could provide different resources depending on how the player approached it.

Once the game reached Steam, that design started changing. In an August development post, Mastný described simplifying mechanics, speeding up progression and adding more rewards because he worried about reviews and losing players.

Quest rewards show how far that went. Players could receive finished weapons and powerful equipment instead of making them, even though crafting was supposed to be one of the main reasons to play. The game gradually made it easier to skip systems Mastný had spent years building.

Those changes also left him maintaining more mechanics while enjoying the game less himself. Eventually, he felt he was no longer making the version of Novus Inceptio he wanted to play.

He does not put all of that on the audience. Mastný has admitted that the game did a poor job explaining how slow and demanding it was, so players had good reason to expect clearer guidance and a more polished experience after paying for Early Access.

He also believes avoiding conventional co-op hurt sales. His original ideas were not automatically the right ones either. Returning to Novus Inceptio now means deciding which feedback actually improves the game and which changes only pull it further away from what made it distinctive in the first place.

Community work kept interrupting development

Trying to satisfy every kind of player also meant spending more time talking to them. In an October interview, Mastný said he worked full time on Novus Inceptio from early 2016 into 2019 without taking proper time off, while also handling bugs, sales, community questions and reactions to the game.

He did have a community manager, but unanswered forum posts kept pulling him back in. Mastný felt players deserved quick replies, while the community manager gradually took on more bug reports and gameplay advice.

For a solo developer, those interruptions add up quickly. A crash report needs investigating, a confused player wants an explanation and a feature request demands a decision. Mastný was trying to deal with all of them while continuing to build the game itself.

He eventually burned out. Development never stopped completely, and a small December 2022 update even brought back the Christmas quests, but later attempts to return never produced the steady progress players had been waiting for.

By March 2026, Mastný was still testing whether he could safely push a new build through Steam's newer release tools. Before the rebuilt systems could reach players, he first had to make sure Novus Inceptio could be updated reliably again.

The return needs a pace he can maintain

Mastný is no longer developing Novus full time. His account of September describes other work taking up the weeks, with the game fitted into evenings and weekends. The October release was the result of work accumulated over time, including months spent on it during 2025.

He has also become more careful about describing unfinished work. Earlier this year, he explained that he wanted a functioning public build before presenting the project as a comeback. The October update gives returning owners something they can actually assess.

Follow-up repairs have already arrived. Three hotfixes released between October 5 and October 8 addressed problems including building becoming unavailable after returning from an anomaly and newly learned recipes requiring a reload before appearing.

In his October 10 update, Mastný said version 0.60.009 would concentrate on fixes and tuning before more content. He wants smaller updates more often, while acknowledging that the overhaul left systems needing further attention.

Player feedback can still help without changing the direction of the game. If a recipe fails to appear or a system stops working as intended, Mastný has something concrete to investigate and fix. Someone disliking the pace or complexity no longer has to send the whole design back to the drawing board.

Smaller releases also shorten the wait between a repair and the moment players can use it. They provide a practical way to rebuild confidence, provided Mastný can keep producing them alongside his other responsibilities.

Future features still have no delivery date

Novus is currently a single-player game. Mastný says co-op and terraforming exist in testing, but neither is included in the October overhaul and neither has a release date.

The original MMORPG plans are gone, and Novus Inceptio still has no target date for leaving Early Access. Several ideas remain at the prototype stage, with more implementation and testing needed before they become part of the game.

The overhaul and its hotfixes are encouraging evidence that development has resumed. Finishing Novus still depends on what Mastný can sustain alongside the rest of his life. If the project again requires him to answer every question and accommodate every request, renewed enthusiasm will only carry him so far.

Early Access left him with an unfinished game people had paid for, and that obligation survived years of stalled development. A lasting return needs room for him to keep working without rebuilding the conditions that stopped him.
