Novus Inceptio Gets First Update Since 2018 as Solo Dev Revives 11-Year-Old Early Access Game
Novus Inceptio has received its first public update since 2018, with solo developer Martin Markus Mastný reviving the 11-year-old Early Access survival game with a larger world, rebuilt systems, and save migration.
Novus Inceptio has received its first public update since 2018, bringing the long-dormant survival game back almost exactly 11 years after it entered Steam Early Access.
Solo developer Martin Markus Mastný, who works under McMagic Productions, released the update on October 5 after quietly rebuilding large parts of the game over the past year. The new version restores its original 64-square-kilometer world, replaces major underlying systems, reworks combat, and lets returning players migrate saves created with the old 2018 build. Mastný told PC Gamer that development has resumed, although he is not working on the project full-time.
Novus returns to the much larger world it launched with

One of the biggest changes is the return of the procedural world used when Novus Inceptio first entered Early Access in 2015. The map covers 64 square kilometers without loading screens and has once again become the game's main world, while the smaller hand-built map introduced in 2017 remains available as the Old World.
Mastný said the 2017 map became difficult to maintain as a solo developer because changes had to be made manually across a large static environment. He eventually returned to the original world, updated it for a newer version of Unity, and found that it still provided a better foundation for the game.
The update goes much deeper than swapping maps. Over the course of the rebuild, Mastný replaced the character controller, save system, item database, input system, localization system, combat, and reward calculations. He previously described the resulting build as close to a different game in how it controls and responds, even though much of its underlying content remains familiar.
Combat has also been rebuilt around clearer progression. The update introduces ranged combat with bows, separates melee and ranged attack values, and changes systems that previously caused stronger player equipment to be offset by increasingly powerful enemies.
Players can bring their old 2018 saves into the new version

Returning players do not necessarily have to abandon characters they last used eight years ago.
The old version tied each character and world together inside one of three save slots. The new system separates characters from worlds, allowing a character to retain stats, skills, inventory, recipes, and progression while moving between different worlds.
Mastný also built a migration tool specifically for saves from the previous Steam version. It reads the old data, separates the character and world, and converts them into the new format while leaving the original save untouched. He acknowledged before release that extremely old saves may not convert perfectly, particularly because some required manual repair even when the game was still actively supported.
The revived version also strips away remnants of Novus Inceptio's original MMO ambitions. The game now runs as a single-player title without the old server login, account requirement, or Ghost Mode backend.
Burnout ended the original run of updates
Mastný gave PC Gamer a more personal explanation for the long gap in development. He said he worked full-time on Novus Inceptio from early 2016 into 2019 while simultaneously dealing with community management, bugs, feedback, sales, and pressure to satisfy different groups of players.
He said the workload eventually resulted in "total collapse and burnout," while repeated compromises also pushed the game away from what he originally wanted to make. PC Gamer's interview is the source for those comments rather than an official development post.
Mastný began publicly discussing the project's return earlier this year, but deliberately avoided presenting it as a major comeback. In April, he said the priority was rebuilding stability and trust rather than making another large promise about the game's future.
That caution remains part of the revived development. Novus Inceptio is still in Early Access, and Mastný has avoided committing to another roadmap or a date for its eventual full release. For now, the October update turns years of behind-the-scenes work into the first substantial public version players have received since 2018.
