Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is an open-world action game developed by Monolith Productions and set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Players control Talion, a ranger who is killed alongside his family and mysteriously bound to the spirit of the elf Celebrimbor. Combat combines sword fighting, stealth and supernatural Wraith abilities, while experience points unlock new skills and upgrades. Players explore Mordor, complete story missions and tackle optional activities across its open regions. The defining feature is the Nemesis System. Orc captains have individual names, ranks, strengths and weaknesses, and they can remember previous encounters with Talion. Enemies who defeat or escape the player may rise through Sauron's army, creating rivalries that develop differently during each playthrough.
