Leaked Mass Effect: Universe trailer reveals BioWare’s cancelled final project
October 23, 2026·3 min read
Zelda: Breath of the Wild gets an experimental native PC port through Savage Wind Recomp, supporting the Great Plateau, 60 FPS and 4K resolution.
A trailer for BioWare’s cancelled next Mass Effect game has leaked online shortly after Electronic Arts announced the studio’s closure. The roughly two-minute video carries the title Mass Effect: Universe and offers the clearest look yet at the RPG BioWare had been developing since its 2020 teaser.
The footage first appeared on Reddit and was later confirmed as genuine by multiple reporters. EA has not formally released the trailer, and some of its details could have changed before launch because it was created during pre-production.
Mass Effect: Universe introduces a new protagonist

The trailer identifies itself as in-engine footage built with pre-production assets. It appears to follow a former Alliance soldier who talks about leaving military service before becoming involved in preventing new crises.
A conversation with an Asari inside a bar eventually turns into combat featuring firearms and familiar biotic abilities. Other scenes show an icy environment, a speeding vehicle, alien species and a large unidentified creature contained inside a facility.
The character wears clothing similar to the mysterious N7 figure shown in BioWare’s earlier promotional material. Commander Shepard does not appear in the leaked footage.
Liara was still part of BioWare’s plans
Liara T’Soni appears in the trailer, strengthening its connection to the original trilogy. BioWare had repeatedly teased her involvement since revealing the project in 2020, but the leaked footage provides a clearer indication that she remained part of the planned story.
The trailer points toward another adventure set in the Milky Way, although its exact timeline remains unclear. The Mass Effect: Universe name may also have been temporary, as internal titles and branding often change before a game reaches full production.
The footage does not mean the game was nearly finished

The polished presentation may make the project look further along than EA’s description of a small team working in early development. The trailer itself makes clear, however, that it was created using pre-production assets rather than finished gameplay.
Studios often produce internal trailers to establish tone, story direction and visual targets long before development is close to completion. BioWare had worked on the project for several years, but resources and staff shifted during development of Dragon Age: The Veilguard and later restructuring.
BioWare’s final project ended with the studio
EA announced that development of the next Mass Effect would end alongside BioWare’s closure. The decision brought an end to more than 30 years of work from the studio behind Dragon Age, Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the original Mass Effect trilogy.
EA still owns the Mass Effect franchise, meaning another studio could eventually return to it. Mass Effect: Universe, however, appears to represent the version BioWare itself was building before the project was cancelled.

Mass Effect: Universe
Planned as the continuation of the Mass Effect series, it was cancelled on October 21st, 2026 following the closure of BioWare.
