Dragon’s Dogma 2 hard mode is officially in development

August 3, 2026·3 min read
Capcom is developing a Hard Mode for Dragon’s Dogma 2, giving experienced players a tougher way to explore the action RPG. The new difficulty was confirmed during a developer Q&A about the upcoming Dark Arisen expansion.

Director Kento Kinoshita said the mode is designed for players whose characters are close to or have reached the stat limit. However, Capcom has not explained exactly how enemies, damage or other systems will change.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 can become much easier once the Arisen and their Pawns reach higher levels. Hard Mode is intended to provide a stronger challenge for players who have completed the story or continued into multiple playthroughs.

Capcom has not confirmed whether the mode will require a new save or work with an existing character. It is also unknown whether it will change enemy placement, rewards, stamina use or the amount of damage players receive.

A release date has not been announced. Producer Naoto Oyama said more details about the mode and its launch window will be shared later.

Dark Arisen Will Become Harder Over Time

Players will not need Hard Mode to find tougher battles in Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen. Capcom said the expansion’s Normal Mode will gradually become more difficult as players move through its new content.

The later parts of the expansion are being balanced to challenge characters who have already reached the stat limit. Enemy encounters will become more dangerous as the story progresses, rather than staying at the same difficulty throughout.

The game will not automatically make every enemy stronger based on the player’s level. Capcom is instead balancing separate areas around recommended starting points and increasing the challenge deeper into each section.

Two Parts Have Different Starting Levels

The Forsaken Dominion takes players to Norgan, a snowy northern region with a new story, enemies and equipment. Capcom recommends reaching Level 40 before beginning this part of the expansion.

Lost Rites adds 12 dungeons to the base game’s existing world and has a recommended starting level of 20. Its early sections can help lower-level characters earn experience and stronger equipment, while later challenges are designed for more powerful parties.

These levels are recommendations rather than strict requirements. Players can enter the content earlier or later depending on how they want to approach the expansion.

Dark Arisen Launches In October

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen launches on October 9, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The expansion adds the Norgan region, new story content, dungeons, enemies, weapons, armor and character customization options.

Capcom has not confirmed whether Hard Mode will arrive with the expansion or through a later update. More information about its rules and release timing will be announced before it becomes available.
