New Game Boy Color RPG Fall from Space Launches After Four Years

September 21, 2026·3 min read

A new Game Boy Color RPG was launched in 2026, with Fall from Space now available as a physical cartridge after just over four years of development.

Created by solo developer Joel Jarman under Joel J Games, Fall from Space is an open-world sci-fi action RPG built to run on real Game Boy hardware. The game combines exploration across multiple worlds with side quests, branching choices, platforming, and several possible endings.

Fall from Space begins with its protagonist waking on an unfamiliar planet with no memory, before expanding into a journey across an interconnected solar system.

Joel J Games describes the game as a non-linear action RPG with Metroidvania-style platforming. Players can explore different worlds, complete side quests, find upgrades, and make decisions that affect characters and events. A karma system also responds to those choices, while the branching story includes multiple endings and additional secret outcomes.

The developer estimates a playthrough at around seven to 10 hours. Other features include save-anywhere support, multiple save slots, unlockables, and Game Boy Printer support.

Jarman began work on Fall from Space in December 2021 and developed the project as a multi-year follow-up to his earlier Game Boy work.

The game was created using GB Studio while staying within the limitations of the original hardware. Joel J Games says the finished version runs on Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and SP, ModRetro Chromatic, Analogue Pocket, and other compatible hardware or software.

The game entered its final QA period in 2026, with testing continuing through the summer before Jarman completed the final ROM in August. Players can also try a free demo containing almost the entire first planet, Pandæmonium, either in a browser or through downloadable Game Boy and Analogue Pocket files.

The physical release is being sold through ModRetro for $44.99 and includes the cartridge, an instruction manual, and a game-specific Chromatic charm. ModRetro lists the cartridge as compatible with Game Boy Color and Chromatic hardware.

Its packaging also features an original painting by Mitsuhiro Arita, whose credits include artwork for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Beatscribe composed the original soundtrack, while Coffee "Valen" Bat provided sound effects.

For now, the full game is only available physically through ModRetro, while the free demo remains available through Itch.io. Jarman says the physical release is currently exclusive to ModRetro and that he plans to look at a digital release and potentially other platforms later, although no timing has been announced.
