Pokémon TCG's 30th Anniversary Faces Availability and Resale Problems

The Pokémon Trading Card Game's 30th-anniversary rollout is already facing availability and resale problems, with sought-after 30th Celebration products selling quickly and sealed items appearing on secondary markets soon after launch.

The Pokémon Company warned customers ahead of release that heavy traffic could lead to products disappearing before checkout was completed. In Japan, Mercari has gone further by temporarily blocking listings for several sealed 30th Celebration products while the marketplace attempts to limit problems around their immediate resale.

The measures do not show that scalpers are responsible for every shortage, but they underline how difficult the opening anniversary releases have become for collectors trying to buy them at retail.

Pokémon Center prepared customers for unusually heavy demand before the 30th Celebration launch on September 16.

Its support guidance warned that visitors could encounter longer virtual queues and website issues during periods of high traffic. Pokémon also made clear that placing a product in a cart would not reserve it, meaning an item could sell out before payment was completed.

Purchase limits have been introduced for some products, although Pokémon notes that these restrictions do not guarantee continued availability. There is also no firm restock schedule for sold-out 30th Celebration products. Pokémon Center says it cannot say whether sold-out 30th Celebration products will be restocked or when a restock could happen.

That uncertainty has added to the pressure around the first wave of the anniversary range, particularly as sealed products begin moving onto resale platforms shortly after release.

Mercari Japan has responded by temporarily restricting sales of several anniversary products on its marketplace.

From September 16, unopened 30th Celebration expansion packs and all nine 30th Celebration Card Sets were prohibited from being listed through Mercari and Mercari Shops. The restriction on the Card Sets applies regardless of whether the packaging has been opened, while individual cards removed from products can still be sold.

The nine Card Sets are not scheduled to release until October 16, meaning that part of Mercari's restriction was introduced before those products reached stores.

Mercari says the measure is intended to prevent confusion after release and maintain a safe trading environment. Its policies allow products to be restricted when issues such as improper listings, disputes, or significant price movement create problems for buyers and sellers.

The company has not announced a date for the restriction to end. Listings will remain blocked until Mercari determines that the products can be traded safely again. The measure applies specifically to Mercari's Japanese marketplace and is not a global ban on reselling Pokémon TCG products.

The current shortages do not represent the entire 30th-anniversary rollout. Pokémon is releasing the 30th Celebration range across multiple products rather than concentrating everything into the September 16 launch. Additional collections, Booster Bundles, Mini Tins, and other anniversary items are scheduled to follow.

That wider release plan should give collectors more opportunities to buy cards from the set, although Pokémon has not promised that specific sold-out products from the first wave will return.

For now, the opening days of the celebration have already produced the familiar combination of heavy demand, limited immediate availability, and rapid secondary-market activity. With Mercari restricting some anniversary listings and Pokémon Center unable to provide restock dates, securing certain 30th Celebration products at retail remains uncertain.
