Phantasy Star Online is now playable directly in a web browser

September 16, 2026·3 min read
Sega’s original Phantasy Star Online can now be played directly through modern web browsers thanks to an unofficial fan project called PSO Reborn. The browser recreation works on PCs and mobile devices without requiring players to download or install the original game client.

PSO Reborn is still in an early alpha and is not connected to Sega. Multiplayer went live on September 14, only days after the developer first made the browser project available for testing.

Players can open PSO Reborn through a browser and start playing with keyboard and mouse, a compatible controller, or touchscreen controls on mobile devices. The developer rebuilt the game for web technology rather than simply running the original client inside a browser.

The project recreates familiar areas, enemies, weapons, items, quests, and other parts of the classic experience. The developer has also added quality-of-life changes such as automatic Meseta pickup, a shared bank between characters, and access to drops regardless of Section ID.

Online multiplayer is already available

PSO Reborn initially appeared as a single-player build, but online multiplayer was added shortly afterward. Players can now join others on Ragol through the browser without installing a separate multiplayer client.
Each player gets their own enemy drops, so party members do not have to race for the same valuable item.

Online characters are stored through the project’s servers, allowing players to access their progress from another device after signing in. Offline saves are stored locally in the browser instead and can be lost if that browser data is cleared.

The browser version is still an early build

Players have reported issues with control remapping, enemy behavior, mobile inputs, techniques, and other parts of the game. The developer has also said PSO Reborn is still an alpha and needs more fixes.

More than 100 bug fixes and quality-of-life changes were made around the multiplayer launch, according to the developer. Further work is also planned for mobile performance and other features as testing continues.

The project brings Sega’s online RPG to modern devices

Phantasy Star Online originally launched on Dreamcast in 2000 and became an early example of an online RPG built around console multiplayer. Later versions appeared on other platforms, while Sega eventually continued the series through Phantasy Star Online 2 and Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis.

PSO Reborn is separate from those official Sega games and remains a fan-made project. Its current alpha nevertheless offers a much quicker route into the classic style of Phantasy Star Online, with both solo and multiplayer sessions now accessible from a compatible browser.
